Writing:
Evaluate and edit by assessing the effectiveness of
their own and others’ writing
20 mins
Allow pupils to reflect on their own piece of writing and
consider the feedback they received from their partner.
They should then edit their biography and make
improvements to the content, grammar, vocabulary,
spelling and punctuation, as appropriate.
The biographies could be typed up on computers or
laptops, and children can focus on font sizes for headings
and paragraph spacing, etc. This would also support
pupils with the editing process, as they can use
spellcheck to make corrections.
You might provide
suggested vocabulary
for pupils to include in
their work.
Pupils could use
dictionaries to check the
spelling of words.

Assessment opportunities
During the annotation portion of the lesson, teachers can assess how well pupils already know
key writing and grammatical features through input from the learners, and further questioning.
Children can utilise the tick list to self-assess that they have met lesson expectations throughout
the writing portion of the lesson.
Children can carry out further reflections through peer review in the plenary. They can also take
on positive and constructive criticism from their peers during the plenary.
