Writing:
Plan their writing by:
Identifying the audience for and purpose of the
writing, selecting the appropriate form and using
other similar writing as models for their own
Noting and developing initial ideas
Drawing on reading and research where necessary
Draft and write by:
Using further organisational and presentational
devices to structure text and to guide the reader
[for example, headings, bullet points, underlining]

Use of apostrophes
Use of colons before a list
Use four sentence types: statement, command,
exclamation, question
Using the Biography Planning Sheet, ask children to
plan what they will include in their introduction and
subsequent sections, along with the headings they will
use.
Some children may
benefit from being given
headings.
You could leave the
annotated Serena
Williams biography
example on the board
for children to refer to.
They can also note down any particular vocabulary they
would like to include in their writing to engage the
reader.
Hand out the Biography Writing Checklist for pupils to
refer to when writing their biographies. Remind children
to tick items off this list as they go to ensure they have
included certain features.
Writing:
Evaluate and edit by assessing the effectiveness of
their own and others’ writing

Ask children to share their biographies with a partner,
showing them how they have met each item on the
checklist.
Consider how to pair the
children so they will
benefit them when
providing useful
feedback to each other.
Ask each child to think of three things they really like
about their partner’s piece and one thing that would
make it even better.
